Border and Red Fells
| Borders and Red Fells? May well you ask why this grouping. This stems from the fact that Border Terriers are close cousins of Fell terriers and you often find hints of the Border within the genetics of the Fells. The colouring of the Red Fell Terrier with a broken or wire coat draws you close to the Border: especially Working Border types. So cousins indeed and unless the Red Fell is smooth, the resemblance is clear, the Fell having longer noses. Ofcourse origins geographically "the Borders" are next to "the Lakes". People will see the Red Fells and ask is there Border in there… "There may well be" is always to reply, as with terriers! Red Fells are not so well known and indeed as Black is the dominant gene there are usually within a litter of Fells more black than reds or black and tans, so they are rarer. Read up on the Fell Terriers on this website for Red Fells. 'Show Borders' are a recognised KC breed and for this reason have 'pet generation' lines so the working instincts have had a chance to settle a little so although you do get Borders with strong working instincts it is more the exception, unless you are looking at the 'rougher' working type Border. Show Borders like Schnauzers are 'softer' and somehow have a reputation of being 'easier' and have a strong Breed Rescue, so rarely come through our rescue. We will also get crosses denoted by the border shorter nose, as the clue. |
